Whiterock Conservancy

Director of Development and Communications

Whiterock Conservancy, a 5,000-acre non-profit land trust located in rural west-central Iowa along the Middle Raccoon River near the progressive small town of Coon Rapids, IA, seeks a full-time Director of Development and Communications to manage all aspects of Whiterock's fundraising efforts (annual and major gifts; foundation, corporate, and government grants; planned giving; and special events) including research, strategy, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Whiterock has endowment and farm income sufficient for minimum operations but relies on grants and donations for internal trail and facilities development, restoration activities, and public programming activities. A full job description is on Whiterock's website: www.whiterockconservancy.org. ($40,000 – $52,000 depending on experience)

The worksite can be located full-time within Whiterock's offices in Coon Rapids IA, or split between Coon Rapids and an office in the greater Des Moines area. A Director of Development and Communications residing in or near Des Moines would be expected to work in Coon Rapids approximately three days a week during the fair weather season (May – October) and two days a week (November – April) during the balance of the year. Ample flexibility will be allowed to avoid traveling in poor weather conditions. Whiterock will provide overnight accommodations within the lovely Garst Farmhouse Bed and Breakfast as an additional benefit for the semi-remote director.

Whiterock was created in 2005 to steward a large, bio-diverse private land donation that includes seven square miles of land along both sides of the Middle Raccoon River as well as the historic Garst Farm visited by Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev during the Cold War. The Conservancy's three main programs are: 1) environmental stewardship and restoration; 2) sustainable agriculture; and 3) low-impact public recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, lodging, camping, event hosting, canoeing, and interpretive events.

The position will be open until filled. All resumes must be accompanied with a cover letter, a writing sample (press release, letter to donors, or sample pages from a grant, etc.), the names and contact information for three references, and must be emailed to: conrad@whiterockconservancy.org. In addition to the required electronic application, hard copies may optionally be sent to:
